After picking Josh off the floor, we went and called the agent and made an offer! After some negotiating the outdated poop brown colonial was ours! We did not even move in before we started on projects.. Objective #1- Rid the world of the brown paint and pink/orange/brown brick!
I know most of you will say it really doesn't look that bad, but in person the siding was very fleshy, which is not a word you should ever use to describe a paint color willingly applied to anything other than a canvas portraying a person with the matching complexion. Josh doesn't think there is anything wrong with the exterior colors, but I can't tell if it is due to his horrible taste or his stingy side is motivating his opinion.
Now that I have ultimate cage battled Josh and won I was able to get the house painted. What colors to paint the house? I will be honest I am getting a little tired of painted white houses just because I see them so much. Also, due to the recent Modern Farmhouse craze (Thanks a bunch Joanna Gaines!) many people are wanting to update their houses and a very inexpensive and very impactful method is painting. The issue I have noticed is people go TOO white and then it creates an almost stark appearance.
Josh and I are always trying to keep resale value in mind when deciding on our projects and even though I would have loved to go untraditional with a dark color paint, resale and the HOA approval made me decide on a white.
Here were the contenders!
Knowing I wanted to stay away from Pure White, High Reflective White, and Extra White and go with something warmer, but not too warm that it goes tan or pink. Through the Goldilocks Method, this one is too warm or this is too cool, I got it down to these 4 Contenders I have used throughout the past many years. Since the Toque and Zurich Whites both have higher red tones while lower blue it gives a much warmer tone. I decided to go with Sherwin Williams Origami White as it has a higher blue count that makes it less warm.
First coat of Origami White and I am really loving the tone! Not too white or creamy! It's getting exciting!!
Are you seeing the pinkish, orangish, poopish tones?
Now to decide on the shutters and front door!
I knew I wanted to do a medium tone gray on the shutters. There are considerably more than 50 shades of gray and my objective is to have a warmer gray that does not have too much red undertones that it goes purple.
Although, I have really liked Gauntlet Gray I feel it is a little darker and more contrast then I had wanted. I nearly flipped a coin between Dovetail and Acier! To be honest, since I had used Dovetail on so many past projects that out of sheer curiosity I chose Acier. Shutters are easy to repaint if I don't like it! I say that even though I have shutters on the second floor... that will be a problem for another day!
I would like a fun color for the front door, something fresh! I had been really intrigued with doing a pink front door, I mean we have all girls! #girlhouse
I knew I would be using Naval in the kitchen and powder room and I like the idea of a connecting the indoors and outdoors. I say that, but want something brighter. So 86 the Naval! I really wanted the pink, but I think I was experiencing some PTSD from the the previous fleshy tones and decided I didn't have the guts! Part of me, the Dutch side, felt I should go with Dutch Tile Blue, but I admit I did not give my heritage the respect it deserves and went with Copen Blue. It has that bit of green that lends a fresh tone.
Here is our new color scheme for our exterior!
Completed exteriors! And guess what? Josh said he loves it and it is much better than the brown. When will he remember he married a designer?
What do you guys think?
Love the story and see your genius! Bring it on!
This is awesome! You are hysterical! I can’t wait to see what’s next
